See privacy policyIn Mexico, artisanship is the essence of a community’s identity, capturing culture, traditions and stories in handcrafted objects that bear the unique imprint of their maker.
Our Master Artisans collection celebrates Mexico’s finest artistic expressions by collaborating with its most esteemed artisans. Each piece blends deep-rooted heritage with visionary craftsmanship, telling timeless stories through exquisite design.
Named after its green, white and red tonalities, those of the Mexican flag, barro bandera (“flag-colored clay”) is one of the most representative traditions from the pottery-making community of Tonalá, Jalisco.
Pieces of barro bandera, in which the natural red color of clay is predominant, are painted with delicate motifs in white and green—among them geometric compositions, flora, fauna and scenes of daily life.
In this edition of Master Artisans, Fernando Jimón and María Elena López engage in a creative dialogue around barro bandera, an increasingly rare pottery technique from their hometown, Tonalá, Jalisco. They deconstruct and reinterpret the technique’s traditional colors through a set of three decanters that visually converse with one another.
The designs from each Master Artisan come together harmoniously in these pieces, blending their unique familial traditions. López contributes detailed floral and plant motifs, while Jimón adds charismatic folk elements like eagles, the moon and nahuales.
